Thank You for an Inspiring Evening!

On November 29th, over 50 community members braved the first snowstorm of the season to join us at the Simcoe Street Theatre for a transformative screening of Uncharitable. This thought-provoking documentary challenged the traditional notions of philanthropy and nonprofit work, calling for bold innovation to create a more resilient nonprofit ecosystem in Southern Georgian Bay.

The screening was followed by dynamic discussions led by local philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, and community changemakers. Together, we explored critical questions about how charities can pool resources, collaborate more effectively, and adapt to a changing donor landscape. Attendees shared ideas, concerns, and opportunities for growth, with many reflecting that “everyone needs to see this film.”

Key takeaways from the event included:

  • Reimagining Philanthropy: The importance of viewing philanthropy as a driver for innovation and long-term impact rather than as a band-aid solution.
  • Collaboration Opportunities: While collective action was seen as promising, some organizations voiced hesitation, revealing an ongoing challenge in balancing collaboration with maintaining individual identities and donor bases.
  • Engaging the Rising Generation: The need to inspire younger generations to engage in community-building and philanthropy was identified as a critical opportunity for growth.
  • The Role of The Institute: Many attendees recognized The Institute as a potential convener to foster dialogue and action among nonprofits, funders, and changemakers in the region.
