The Institute’s Social Finance and Affordable Housing Group is committed to building out The Whole Community Approach to Affordable Housing by bringing our communities together to “roll up our sleeves” and learn together how we can leverage the community wealth we already have to create more affordable housing.

Event one Leveraging Community Wealth for community benefit sold out. Check out the summary report and recording of that event.

Event 2 in the Series: The Mechanics of Community Wealth Online Series

Mark your calendars for this second event in this series on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. The second event will focus on some of the mechanics of how we build the capacity to leverage the wealth we already have in community.

Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2026

Time: 4:30 to 6:00 PM

In event two, our guests will explore how we can think about building thriving local economies, leveraging the wealth we already have in new ways to ensure our region’s potential. Without housing that our workers can afford, business doesn’t thrive and the need for food and shelter subsidies increase. In this event we have planned lots of time for audience questions and ideas.

Our Guests

Dr. Audrey Jamal, University of Guelph will help us to see how the landscape of local economies is changing, where the innovation is and what role municipalities, nonprofit organizations and private individuals play to ensure our community economies thrive.

Ben Miller, lawyer with the Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) will help us to see how nonprofit and charitable organizations have much more ability to leverage financing for affordable housing than you might think.

Stephanie Pinnington of Tapestry Capital will show us how a community built an organization that created a way for Canadian communities to leverage local investment through Community Bonds – one of the key new community wealth financing vehicles models supporting housing affordability.

And, put April 15th 4:30-6:00 in your calendar for our final session and get ready to hear from the communities that are already doing it.
